After 4 years of school in Glendale, Arizona we moved to Loma Linda, California a couple of weeks ago. While we will miss almost everything about Arizona we are excited for this next chapter of our lives and are anxious to see what it will bring. We're pretty much settled and are starting to get a little more familiar with our new home. Here's a couple of interesting things we've learned about Loma Linda so far...
- Loma Linda literally means "beautiful hill" in Spanish. To the south of the city there are a series of small hills that right now are rather boring and blah but I'm sure they'll be beautiful in the spring :)
- The city itself is rather small (only 7.3 square miles with just over 20,000 people) and is surrounded by Redlands, San Bernadino and Riverside. It's 5 hours from Phoenix and just under 9 hours from Salt Lake City.
- Loma Linda University is the main employer and draw to the city with its undergraduate programs, graduate programs (including medical and dental schools) and large hospital facilities.
- The city is the center of the Seventh-day Adventist church. Basically this translates to mail being delivered on Sunday rather than Saturday (Saturday is the sabbath) and pretty much everything being closed on Saturday (grocery stores, library, etc). Also, Seventh-day Adventists have a health 'code' of sorts that prohibits alcohol, caffeine, meat and mustard.
- The Redlands temple is only 10 minutes away and is beautiful!
- Los Angeles is approximately 60 miles to the west as well as a host of Southern California beaches (think Laguna, Huntington, Newport, etc.).
- 40 minutes to the north east is a ski resort called Big Bear. We can't wait to drive up into the Utah-like mountains.

- We're still within 5 miles of both a Costco and an In-N-Out
And just because we now have 2 cute girls, here's an updated picture.

Hope you guys are doing well and having fun adjusting!
What an interesting little city!! I have never heard of the Seventh Adventis church...interesting! :) I'm glad you made it there safely and are getting settled. Sounds like you are in a great location and close to all the fun stuff. The girls are so adorable in their pic! Have fun on your new adventure
What a gorgeous temple! Glad your move went well. Beautiful girlies and beautiful new family pictures. :)
WOW, sounds like things are close..and you are going to be able to have a great time with lots of fun things. That is funny about saturdays though...i guess that you will always have to think ahead for food and such. josh will look good in that great big building also.
First of all, congratulations on graduating! That's a huge accomplishment for your WHOLE family.
And that's awesome that you're in Loma Linda now. Did you know that I was born in Riverside and lived there until I was nine? Not that I remember it at all. :)
Jacob is getting his masters degree at a Seventh-Day Adventist school, and we live in an SDA community. (Although ours is very small, like 2000 people.) It is different, like having to remember to get to the grocery store by 4 PM on Fridays to get food for the weekend, but we love it. It feels a lot like being at BYU, having a religious community. It's just a different religion!
So exciting! We're so happy for you to start on this next adventure. Loma Linda sounds like a great place to be.
